In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful
Al-Nawawi records in his book Riyad al-Salihin:
Allah Almighty said:
O you who have faith, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous. It is for a limited number of days, so whoever among you is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of days to be made up. Upon those who are in hardship, a substitute of feeding a poor person. Whoever volunteers more, it is better for him, but to fast is best for you if you only knew. The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, guidance for people and clear proofs of guidance and distinction. Whoever sights the month, let him fast it. Whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship, and he intends for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that to which he has guided you, that perhaps you will be grateful.
Surat al-Baqarah 2:183-185
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Allah Almighty said, ‘Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except for fasting. It is for Me and I will reward it.’ Fasting is a shield, so when one of you fasts, he may not be obscene or boisterous. If someone insults him or fights him, let him say: Indeed, I am fasting. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the breath coming from the mouth of a fasting person is more pleasant to Allah than the scent of musk. The fasting person has two moments of relief he enjoys: when he breaks his fast he is joyful, and when he meets his Lord he is joyful for his fasting.

In another narration, the Prophet said:
Allah Almighty said, ‘He abandons his food, drink, and desires for My sake. Fasting is for Me and I will reward it, a single good deed up to ten times the like of it.

And in another narration, the Prophet said:
Every deed of the son of Adam is multiplied, a single deed as ten times the like of it up to seven hundred times. Allah Almighty said, ‘Except for fasting, as it is for Me and I will reward it. He leaves his desires and his food for My sake.’

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Anyone who spends a pair in the way of Allah will be called from all the gates of Paradise: O servant of Allah, this is good! The people of prayer will be called from the gate of prayer, the people of jihad will be called from the gate of jihad, the people of fasting will be called from the gate of al-Rayyan, and the people of charity will be called from the gate of charity.
Abu Bakr said, “One who is called from all those gates would need nothing. Will anyone be called from all those gates, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet said:
Yes, and I hope you will be among them, O Abu Bakr.

Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Verily, there is a gate in Paradise called al-Rayyan, through which only those who fasted will enter on the Day of Resurrection. No one else will enter it along with them. It will be said: Where are those who fasted? They will stand and no one will enter it along with them. When they enter it, it will be closed and no one else will go through it.

Ibn Umar reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
Do not fast the month of Ramadan until you see the crescent moon, and do not break your fast until you see it. If the sky is cloudy for you, then estimate it.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was the most generous of people and he was even more generous in Ramadan when Gabriel would meet him. He would meet him every night of Ramadan to study the Quran. Thus, the Prophet would be more generous than a nourishing wind.

Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said:

Al-Nawawi writes:
Our scholars said that being generous and performing favors are highly recommended during Ramadan, specifically during the last ten nights. By doing so, we emulate the example of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, as well as our predecessors. This month is honored and good deeds performed in this month are more blessed than they are at any other time.
