Imam al-Nawawi on Innovation in Religion

In the Name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful

Imam al-Nawawi records in his book Meadows of the Righteous:

Chapter on the prohibition of religious innovations and unprecedented matters.

Allah Almighty said:

That is Allah, your True Lord. So what is beyond the truth except falsehood? How can you then be turned away?

Surat Yunus 10:32

And Allah said:

We have left nothing out of the Book.

Surat al-An’am 6:38

And Allah said:

O believers! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. Should you disagree on anything, then refer it to Allah and His Messenger, if you truly believe in Allah and the Last Day. This is the best and fairest resolution.

Surat al-Nisa’ 4:59

And Allah said:

Indeed, that is My Path, perfectly straight. So follow it and do not follow other ways, for they will lead you away from His Way. This is what He has commanded you, so perhaps you will be conscious of Allah.

Surat al-An’am 6:153

And Allah said:

Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me. Allah will love you and forgive your sins. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.’

Surat Ali ‘Imran 3:31

And Allah said:

Say, ‘I am not the first messenger ever sent, nor do I know what will happen to me or you. I only follow what is revealed to me. And I am only sent with a clear warning.’

Surat al-Ahqaf 46:9

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

Whoever innovates something into this affair of ours which does not belong to it will have it rejected.

In another narration, the Prophet said:

Whoever performs a deed that is not in accordance with our matter will have it rejected.

Al-‘Irbad ibn Sariyah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed with us one day. Then, he faced us and delivered an eloquent sermon that brought tears to our eyes and hearts were shaken by it. It was said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is as if this is a farewell address. What do you instruct for us?” The Prophet said:

I advise you to fear Allah, listen, and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is put in charge of you. Whoever lives after me will see many conflicts. You must adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the righteous, guided successors. Hold firmly to it as if biting with your molar teeth. Beware of newly invented matters in religion, for every new matter is an innovation and, every innovation is misguidance.
