In the name of Allah, the Gracious, the Merciful
Al-Nawawi records in his book Riyad al-Salihin:
Sahl ibn Sa’d reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
لَا يَزَالُ النَّاسُ بِخَيْرٍ مَا عَجَّلُوا الْفِطْرَ
People will continue in goodness as long as they hasten to break their fast.

Abu Atiyyah reported: Masruq and I visited Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and he said, “O mother of the believers, there are two companions of Muhammad and neither of them hold back from doing good. One of them hastens to break his fast and to perform the evening prayer, while the other delays breaking his fast and performing the prayer.” Aisha asked, “Who is the one who breaks his fast and performs prayer?” He said, “It is Abdullah ibn Mas’ud.” Aisha said:
كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to do so.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
قَالَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَحَبُّ عِبَادِي إِلَيَّ أَعْجَلُهُمْ فِطْرًا
Allah Almighty said: The most beloved among my servants are those who are quickest to break their fast.

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
إِذَا أَقْبَلَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَأَدْبَرَ النَّهَارُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَغَرَبَتْ الشَّمْسُ فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ
When the night approaches from the east and day retreats from the west and the sun has set, it is time to break the fast.

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
إِذَا غَابَتْ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا وَجَاءَ اللَّيْلُ مِنْ هَا هُنَا فَقَدْ أَفْطَرَ الصَّائِمُ
When you see the sun set and night has come from the east, it is time to break the fast.

Salman ibn Amir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
إِذَا أَفْطَرَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى تَمْرٍ فَإِنَّهُ بَرَكَةٌ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَلْيُفْطِرْ عَلَى مَاءٍ فَإِنَّهُ طَهُورٌ
When one of you breaks his fast, let him break it with dates for they are blessed. If they are not found, let him break it with water for it is pure.

Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُفْطِرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُصَلِّيَ عَلَى رُطَبَاتٍ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ رُطَبَاتٌ فَتُمَيْرَاتٌ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَكُنْ تُمَيْرَاتٌ حَسَا حَسَوَاتٍ مِنْ مَاءٍ
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would break his fast before praying with fresh dates. If there were no fresh dates, then with dry dates. If there were no dry dates, then with some sips of water.
