Al-Nawawi on forgiveness and pardon

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Al-Nawawi records in his book, Riyad us-Saliheen:

Allah said:

Show forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

Surat Al-A’raf 7:199

And Allah said:

Verily, the Hour is coming, so forgive them with gracious forgiveness.

Surat Al-Hijr 15:85

And Allah said:

Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.

Surat An-Nur 24:22

And Allah said:

The believers are those who spend in charity during ease and hardship and who restrain their anger and pardon the people, for Allah loves the doers of good.

Surat Ali Imran 3:134

And Allah said:

Whoever is patient and forgives, verily, that is among the matters of steadfast determination.

Surat Ash-Shura 42:43

Aisha reported: She asked the Prophet , “Have you encountered a day harder than the battle of Uhud?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, “Your tribes have troubled very much, and the worst was the day of Aqaba when I presented myself to Ibn Abd-Yalail ibn Abd-Kulal and he did not respond to what I intended. So I departed, overwhelmed with excessive sorrow, and I could not relax until I found myself at a tree where I lifted my head towards the sky to see a cloud shading me. I looked up and saw Gabriel in it. He called me saying, “Allah has heard your people’s saying to you and how they have replied. Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people.” The Angel of the Mountains greeted me, and said, “O Muhammad, order what you wish. If you like, I will let the mountains fall on them.” The Prophet said:

No, I hope that Allah will bring from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone without associating partners with Him.

Aisha reported:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was not presented with two matters except that he would choose the easier one as long as it was not sinful, but if it was sinful then he would be the furthest of the people from it. The Messenger of Allah did not take revenge for anything against himself, but if the sacred law of Allah was violated then he would take legal retribution for the sake of Allah.

Anas ibn Malik reported:

I was walking with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was wearing a Najrani sheet with a thick border. A desert Arab overtook the Prophet and forcibly pulled his clothes. I looked at the shoulder of the Prophet and I saw that the edge of his shirt had left a mark because of the strength of his pull. The man said, “O Muhammad! Order them to give me something from Allah’s wealth which you have!” The Prophet turned and he smiled; then he ordered that he be given charity.

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, tell the story of a prophet who was beaten by his people and he wiped the blood from his face, saying:

My Lord, forgive my people for they do not know.

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

The strong are not the best wrestlers. Verily, the strong are only those who control themselves when they are angry.
