Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: I remember seeing the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, tell the story of a prophet who was beaten by his people, and he wiped the blood from his face, saying, “My Lord, forgive my people for they do not know.”

Imam al-Nawawi commented, “In this is the forbearance, patient endurance, forgiveness, and compassion of the Prophets, peace and blessings be upon them, for their people, their prayers for them to be guided, forgiven, and excused for their crimes against themselves, that they did not know what they were doing. The prophet referred to here is among the predecessors, but something similar occurred with our Prophet on the day of Uhud.”
