Abu al-Malih reported: A man said, “I was riding on a mount behind the Prophet, and it stumbled, so I said: May Satan perish!” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not say: May Satan perish! If you say that, he will swell with pride until he becomes as big as a house, and he says: By my might! Rather, you should say: In the name of Allah. If you say that, he will shrink until he becomes as small as a fly.”

Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Arna’ut
Imam Ibn al-Qayyim commented, “Similar to this is asking Allah to disgrace or disfigure Satan. All of this makes him happy, and he says: The son of Adam knows that I have overtaken him by my strength! This helps him in his deviance, as it has no benefit at all. Thus, the Prophet instructed whoever is touched by anything from Satan to remember Allah Almighty, to mention His name, and to seek refuge in Him, for that is more beneficial to him and more irritating to Satan.”

عَنْ أَبِي الْمَلِيحِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ رَدِيفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَثَرَتْ دَابَّةٌ فَقُلْتُ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَقَالَ لَا تَقُلْ تَعِسَ الشَّيْطَانُ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَعَاظَمَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الْبَيْتِ وَيَقُولُ بِقُوَّتِي وَلَكِنْ قُلْ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّكَ إِذَا قُلْتَ ذَلِكَ تَصَاغَرَ حَتَّى يَكُونَ مِثْلَ الذُّبَابِ

قال ابن القيم وَمِثْلُ هَذَا قَوْلُ الْقَائِلِ أَخْزَى اللَّهُ الشَّيْطَانَ وَقَبَّحَ اللَّهُ الشَّيْطَانَ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ يُفْرِحُهُ وَيَقُولُ عَلِمَ ابْنُ آدَمَ أَنِّي قَدْ نِلْتُهُ بِقُوَّتِي وَذَلِكَ مِمَّا يُعِينُهُ عَلَى إِغْوَائِهِ وَلَا يُفِيدُهُ شَيْئًا فَأَرْشَدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَنْ مَسَّهُ شَيْءٌ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى وَيَذْكُرَ اسْمَهُ وَيَسْتَعِيذَ بِاللَّهِ مِنْهُ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ أَنْفَعُ لَهُ وَأَغْيَظُ لِلشَّيْطَانِ
