Umar on Justice: Judge Shurayh rules against the Caliph

Al-Sha’bi reported: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, took a horse from a man to test-ride it. The man handed it over and the horse injured its leg while it was with Umar. The man argued with him, so Umar said, “Let a man judge between us.” The man said, “Indeed, I would be satisfied with Shurayh from Iraq.” They went to Shurayh and he said to Umar, “You took it healthy and sound, so you are liable to return it healthy and sound.” Umar was so impressed that he appointed him as a judge.
