Hadith on Faith: Islam has sixty branches, including modesty

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Faith has sixty to seventy branches, the best of which is to declare there is no God but Allah, the least of which is to remove something harmful from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith.”

Imam Zakariyah al-Ansari commented, “The meaning of the Hadith is the branches of perfecting faith, which is belief, affirmation, and deeds. Belief is traced back to the actions of the heart… sincerity, repentance, fear, hope, abandoning despair and hopelessness, gratitude, keeping promises, patience, humility, mercy, contentment with divine providence, and reliance upon Allah. It entails abandoning vanity, envy, malice, anger, malevolence, and love for the worldly life.”
