Abdullah ibn Amr reported: I saw ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu’ayt coming to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while he was praying. ‘Uqbah put his sheet around the Prophet’s neck and squeezed it tightly. Abu Bakr came and pulled ‘Uqbah away from the Prophet and he said, “Do you kill a man only because he says, ‘My Lord is Allah,’ and he brought you clear evidence from your Lord?”

عَنْ عَبْد اللَّهِ بْن عَمْرٍو قَالَ رَأَيْتُ عُقْبَةَ بْنَ أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ جَاءَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فَوَضَعَ رِدَاءَهُ فِي عُنُقِهِ فَخَنَقَهُ بِهِ خَنْقًا شَدِيدًا فَجَاءَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ حَتَّى دَفَعَهُ عَنْهُ فَقَالَ أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ وَقَدْ جَاءَكُمْ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ
