Hadith on Graves: Two punished for easily avoidable sins

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by two graves and he said, “Both of them are being punished, but not for a sin difficult to avoid. As for this man, he did not stop his urine from soiling himself. And as for this man, he would spread gossip.” The Prophet then asked for a green leaf from a date-palm. The Prophet split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave, and he said, “Perhaps it will be lightened for them as long as these two leaves are not dried.

عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ مَرَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى قَبْرَيْنِ فَقَالَ إِنَّهُمَا لَيُعَذَّبَانِ وَمَا يُعَذَّبَانِ فِي كَبِيرٍ أَمَّا هَذَا فَكَانَ لَا يَسْتَتِرُ مِنْ بَوْلِهِ وَأَمَّا هَذَا فَكَانَ يَمْشِي بِالنَّمِيمَةِ ثُمَّ دَعَا بِعَسِيبٍ رَطْبٍ فَشَقَّهُ بِاثْنَيْنِ فَغَرَسَ عَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا وَعَلَى هَذَا وَاحِدًا ثُمَّ قَالَ لَعَلَّهُ يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمَا مَا لَمْ يَيْبَسَا
