Ibn Abbas on Honor: Best in honor are best in character

Yazid ibn al-‘Asim reported: Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “What do you consider nobility? Allah has made clear the most noble to Allah is the most righteous. What do you consider honor? The best in honor are those among you with the best character.”

عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ الأَصَمِّ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ عَبَّاسٍ رضي الله عنه مَا تَعُدُّونَ الْكَرَمَ وَقَدْ بَيَّنَ اللَّهُ الْكَرَمَ فَأَكْرَمُكُمْ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ مَا تَعُدُّونَ الْحَسَبَ أَفْضَلُكُمْ حَسَبًا أَحْسَنُكُمْ خُلُقًا
