Hadith on Faith: Relations with the Prophet do not guarantee Paradise

Anas ibn Malik reported: A man said, “O Messenger of Allah, where is my father?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “He is in Hellfire.” When he turned away, the Prophet called to him and he said, “Verily, my father and your father are in Hellfire.

Al-Nawawi said, “Whoever dies as an unbeliever will enter Hellfire, and their relationship to those who are close to Allah will not benefit them. Whoever died upon the religion of the Arabs during the period before Islam, which was the worship of idols, he will enter the Hellfire. There is no excuse for them not to receive the call to Islam, for they had already heard the preaching of Abraham and other prophets, peace and blessings be upon them. The Prophet’s saying that ‘my father and your farther are in Hellfire‘ is part of good behavior, to console him in sharing the misfortune.”
