Imam al-San’ani commented, “The believer befriends others and feels at ease with them due to the soundness of his heart, the excellence of his character, and the righteousness of his inner nature. Likewise, people are drawn to him because of his good state and because he is a source of familiarity and comfort to them. There is no good in one who does not cultivate affection with others, for that is due to the badness of his character, the ugliness of his conduct, and the corruption of his inner self—unless he withdraws from people out of preference for piety, devotion to the worship of his Lord, and to distance his own harm from them. And there is no good in one who is not befriended by others, for people only refrain from befriending someone due to the ugliness of his condition, the badness of his character, and the wretchedness of his companionship.”
