Al-Zurqani said, “It means according to his intention. If it is purely to raise the word of Allah, then that is the true soldier (al-mujahid) in the way of Allah. If his intention involves the love of wealth and this world, or to earn fame, then he has associated the world as a partner with the way of Allah.”
