Hadith on Fasting: Making intention before days of obligatory fasting

Hafsa reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever does not have the intention to fast before dawn, there is no fasting for him.

Al-Tirmidhi said, “The meaning according to the people of knowledge is that the fast is invalid if intention is not made before sunrise in Ramadan, or for making up a Ramadan fast, or fasting for a vow. If one does not intend to do so in the night, it is not allowed. As for voluntary fasting, it is permissible to make an intention after morning; it is the opinion of Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and Ishaq.”
