Hadith on Captives: The Prophet’s good treatment of prisoners

Abu ‘Aziz ibn ‘Umayr reported: I was among the prisoners of war on the day of the battle of Badr. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “I enjoin you to treat the captives well.” I was among a group of the Ansar. When the time of their lunch or dinner arrived, they would eat dates and I was fed bread due to the Messenger of Allah’s command for them.

Imam al-Nawawi commented, “It is recommended to give charity specifically to the righteous and people of virtue, good character, and need, but if one were to give charity to a sinner or an unbeliever among the Jews, Christians, or Magians, that is permissible and is rewarded in general. It is the same for a combatant as well, the evidence for which is the saying of Allah Almighty, ‘They give food—despite their desire for it—to the poor, the orphan, and the captive,’ (76:8) and it is well-known the captives were combatants.”
