Sufyan on Mercy: Be merciful to common people, even if they wrong you

Abu Nu’aim reported: Sufyan al-Thawri, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Do not hate anyone who obeys Allah. Be merciful to the common people and their leaders. Do not sever family ties, and keep good relations with those who cut you off. Keep good relations with them, even if they cut you off. Overlook those who wrong you, for you will be a companion to the prophets and the martyrs.”
