Jubayr ibn Nufayr reported: I entered the residence of Abu Darda while he was standing and praying in his place of prayer. When he sat down, he began fervently to recite the testimony of faith and to seek refuge in Allah from hypocrisy. After he finished, I said, “May Allah forgive you, O Abu Darda! What is it about you and hypocrisy?” Abu Darda said, “O Allah, your forgiveness! Who is safe from trial? Who is safe from trial? Who is safe from trial? By Allah, a man might be tested for only an hour and he turns away from his religion.”

عَنْ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ قَالَ دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ مَنْزِلَهُ بِحِمْصَ فَإِذَا هُوَ قَائِمٌ يُصَلِّي فِي مَسْجِدِهِ فَلَمَّا جَلَسَ يَتَشَهَّدُ جَعَلَ يَتَعَوَّذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ النِّفَاقِ فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْتُ غَفَرَ اللَّهُ لَكَ يَا أَبَا الدَّرْدَاءِ مَا أَنْتَ وَالنِّفَاقُ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ غَفْرًا ثَلاثًا مَنْ يَأْمَنُ الْبَلاءَ مَنْ يَأْمَنُ الْبَلاءَ وَاللَّهِ إِنَّ الرَّجُلَ لَيُفْتَتَنُ فِي سَاعَةٍ فَيَنْقَلِبُ عَنْ دِينِهِ
