Hadith on Ijtihad: Two different opinions, both rewarded

Abu Sa’id al-Khudri reported: Two men went out for travel when the time of prayer arrived, but they did not have water with them. They performed dry ablution with clean earth and prayed; later, they found water. One of them repeated his ablution and prayer, while the other did not repeat them. They came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. The Prophet said to the one who did not repeat his prayer, “You have followed the Sunnah correctly, and you will be rewarded for your prayer,” and the Prophet said to the one who repeated his prayer, “You have a double reward.”

Imam al-Qari commented, “’You have a double reward,’ that is, you will be rewarded twice for your prayer, as they were both correct and deserving of compensation, for Allah never wastes the wages of those who do good. This indicates that more caution with deeds is better.”
