‘Ata on Promises: Fulfill your pledges, promises with idolaters

Muhammad ibn Surqah reported: A man said to ‘Ata, may Allah be pleased with him, “A man was captured by the Daylamites and they said: We will send you back if you give us a covenant and a pledge that you will return with some wealth for us. If he does not go back to them himself, and he is not found, what do you order him to do?” ‘Ata said, “He should go back to them.” The man said, “But they are people of idolatry!” ‘Ata said, “He should fulfill the covenant.” The man said, “But they are people of idolatry!” ‘Ata said, “He should fulfill their covenant,” then he recited the verse, “Verily, the covenant will be questioned.” (17:34)
