Ibrahim ibn al-Ash’at reported: I asked Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, “What is humility?” Al-Fudayl said, “It is to humble yourself for the truth, to act in accordance with it, and to accept it even if you hear it from a child.” I asked, “What is patience with calamity?” Al-Fudayl said, “It is to not publicize your complaint.”

عن إبراهيم بن الأشعث قَالَ سَأَلْتُ الْفُضَيْلِ رحمه الله مَا التَّوَاضُعُ قَالَ أَنْ تَخْضَعَ لِلْحَقِّ وَتَنْقَادُ لَهُ وَلَوْ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ صَبِيٍّ قَبَلْتَهُ مِنْهُ وَلَوْ سَمِعْتَهُ مِنْ أَجْهَلِ النَّاسِ قَبَلْتَهُ مِنْهُ وَسَأَلْتُهُ مَا الصَّبْرُ عَلَى الْمُصِيبَةِ قَالَ أَنْ لا تَبُثَّ
