Hadith on Salat: Description of raising the hands in prayer

Abdullah ibn Umar reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would raise his hands parallel to his shoulders when he entered into prayer, and when he exalted Allah for bowing. When he raised his head from bowing, he would likewise raise his hands and say, “Allah hears those who praise him. Our Lord, for you is praise.” The Prophet would not do so in the prostration.

Al-Nawawi said, “The Imams came to a consensus upon the recommendation to raise the hands at the opening exaltation and they disagreed regarding other times. Al-Shafi’i, Ahmad, and the majority of scholars among the companions, may Allah be pleased with them, and those after them said it is recommend also to raise them at the time of bowing and rising from it.”
