Abdullah ibn Abdullah reported: I saw Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, sitting cross-legged in the prayer, so I did so too, as in that day I was young. Ibn Umar forbade me from doing it and he said, “Indeed, the Sunnah of prayer is to prop up the right foot and tuck the left foot.” I said, “But I saw you sitting cross-legged.” Ibn Umar said, “My feet cannot support me.”

Abu Umar said, “As for the correct position, it is not permissible to sit cross-legged in the prayer according to the consensus of the scholars. Likewise, they came to a consensus that whoever does not have the ability to sit properly in prayer should act within his ability. Allah does not hold a soul responsible except for what is within its capacity.”
