Al-Nawawi said, “The scholars disagreed regarding one who enters the ten days of Dhul Hijjah and he intends to sacrifice. Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib, Rabi’ah, Ahmad, Ishaq, Dawud, and some of the companions of Al-Shafi’i said it is forbidden for him to take anything off his hair or nails until he completes the sacrifice in its time. Al-Shafi’i and his companions said it is mildly discouraged, but is not forbidden. Abu Hanifa said it is not discouraged. Malik said in one narration that it is not discouraged, in another narration that it is discouraged, and in another narration that it is forbidden in voluntary sacrifices besides the obligation.”
