Aisha reported: The blind man Ibn Umm Maktum came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said, “O Messenger of Allah, guide me.” At the time, high-ranking men among the idolaters were in the presence of the Prophet, so he turned away from him and faced them. The blind man said, “Have I said something wrong to you?” The Prophet said “No,” and upon this the verse was revealed, “He frowned and turned away,” (80:1).

Qatadah said, “After that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, honored the blind man.”

عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أَتَى (ابْن أُم مَكْتُوم الْأَعْمَى) رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرْشِدْنِي وَعِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ عُظَمَاءِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ فَجَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُعْرِضُ عَنْهُ وَيُقْبِلُ عَلَى الْآخَرِ وَيَقُولُ أَتَرَى بِمَا أَقُولُ بَأْسًا فَيَقُولُ لَا فَفِي هَذَا أُنْزِلَ عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ
