Abu Huraira reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The nobility of a man is in his religion, his chivalry is in his reasoning, and his worth is in his character.”

Imam al-Munawi commented, “’His chivalry is in his reasoning’ because by means of it he is distinguished from animals; by means of it he restrains himself from every base character trait, curbs himself from vile desires and ignoble dispositions, and gives to everyone who possesses a right their due, whether among the rights owed to Allah or those owed to His creation… Rather, the sages have said: Chivalry is of two kinds. One is generosity and giving. The other is restraining one’s aspirations from lowly means and ignoble pursuits. And this latter kind is more complete and more exalted.”
