Abu Sa’id reported: On the day of Badr, the Romans were victorious over the Persians and the believers were pleased by that, as Allah had revealed the verse, “The Romans have been defeated in a nearby land. Yet following their defeat, they will triumph within three to nine years. The matter rests with Allah before and after victory, and on that day, the believers will rejoice at the victory willed by Allah,” (30:1-4). Thus, the believers rejoiced at the victory of the Romans over the Persians.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah commented, “The intelligent are not those who merely know good from evil. Rather, the truly intelligent are those who know the better of two goods or the lesser of two evils.”
