Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: There was a Rabbi who came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, saying, “O Muhammad, Allah will place the heavens on a finger, the earth on a finger, the mountains on a finger, the trees and rivers on a finger, and the rest of creation on a finger, then he will say: I am the King.” The Prophet laughed, and he recited the verse, “They have not estimated Allah as is due to Him.” (39:67)

Imam Ibn Hajar commented, “The apparent context is that the Prophet laughed in confirmation of the Rabbi, as indicated by his recitation of the verse demonstrating the truthfulness of what he had said. The preference in these matters is to refrain from metaphorical interpretations of the Divine Attributes while also believing in Divine Transcendence, for every deficiency implied by their literal meanings is not intended.”

قال ابن حجر وَظَاهِرُ السِّيَاقِ أَنَّهُ ضَحِكَ تَصْدِيقًا لَهُ بِدَلِيلِ قِرَاءَتِهِ الْآيَةَ الَّتِي تَدُلُّ عَلَى صِدْقِ مَا قَالَ الْحَبْرُ وَالْأَوْلَى فِي هَذِهِ الْأَشْيَاءِ الْكَفُّ عَنِ التَّأْوِيلِ مَعَ اعْتِقَادِ التَّنْزِيهِ فَإِنَّ كُلَّ مَا يَسْتَلْزِمُ النَّقْصَ مِنْ ظَاهِرِهَا غَيْرُ مُرَادٍ
