Abu Turab reported: Hatim al-Asamm, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “I saw that everyone has an enemy, so I said I would find out who mine is. As for one who backbites me, he is not my enemy, or one who takes something from me, he is not my enemy. Rather, my enemy is one who commands me to disobey Allah when I am obeying Allah. Thus, I saw that in Satan and his soldiers, so I took them as my enemy, and I waged war between us. I darted my bow, drew my arrow, and never let him come near me.”

عن أبي تُرَابٍ عن حاتم الأصم رحمه الله قال رَأَيْتُ كُلَّ النَّاسِ لَهُمْ عَدُوٌّ فَقُلْتُ أَنْظُرُ مَنْ عَدُوِّي فَأَمَّا مَنِ اغْتَابَنِي فَلَيْسَ عَدُوِّي وَأَمَّا مِنْ أَخَذَ مِنِّي شَيْئًا فَلَيْسَ هُوَ عَدُوِّي وَلَكِنْ عَدُوِّي الَّذِي إِذَا كُنْتُ فِي طَاعَةِ اللهِ أَمَرَنِي بِمَعْصِيَةِ اللهِ فَرَأَيْتُ ذَلِكَ إِبْلِيسَ وَجُنُودَهُ فَاتَّخَذْتُهُمْ عَدُوًّا فَوَضَعْتُ الْحَرْبَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُمْ وَوَتَرْتُ قَوْسِي وَوَصَلْتُ سَهْمِي فَلَا أَدَعُهُ يَقَرَبُنِي
