Hadith on Khutbah al-Hajah: How the Prophet began his sermons

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gave us the combination of all good things and their endings, for he taught us the statements of prayer and the statements of need. The statements of prayer are, “All greetings, prayers, and good things are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I testify there is no God but Allah, and I testify Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.” The statements of need are, “All praise is due to Allah. We praise him, we seek His help, we seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whomever Allah guides, there is none to misguide him. Whomever Allah leads astray, there is none to guide him. I testify there is no God but Allah alone, without any partners, and that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.” Then, he would add to his statement with three verses from the Book of Allah, “O believers! Fear Allah in the way He deserves, and do not die except in as Muslims,” (3:102) and, “Fear Allah, in Whose Name you appeal to one another, and honor family ties. Surely, Allah is ever Watchful over you,” (4:1) and, “Fear Allah and say what is right. He will bless your deeds for you, and forgive your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has truly achieved a great triumph.” (33:70-71)
