Hadith on Shaytan: Parable of the Prophet as warning of enemies

Buraydah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came out and called out to us three times, “O people! Do you know the parable between you and myself?” They said, “Allah and His messenger know best.” The Prophet said, “Verily, the parable between you and myself is that of a people who feared an enemy approaching them, so they dispatched a man to keep watch for them. While they were doing so, he saw the enemy and returned to warn them, afraid that the enemy would reach them before he could warn his people.” The Prophet threw up his garment and he said three times, “O people, you have been encroached!

عَنْ بُرَيْدَة قَالَ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا فَنَادَى ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ فَقَالَ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ تَدْرُونَ مَا مَثَلِي وَمَثَلُكُمْ قَالُوا اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ قَالَ إِنَّمَا مَثَلِي وَمَثَلُكُمْ مَثَلُ قَوْمٍ خَافُوا عَدُوًّا يَأْتِيهِمْ فَبَعَثُوا رَجُلًا يَتَرَاءَى لَهُمْ فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ أَبْصَرَ الْعَدُوَّ فَأَقْبَلَ لِيُنْذِرَهُمْ وَخَشِيَ أَنْ يُدْرِكَهُ الْعَدُوُّ قَبْلَ أَنْ يُنْذِرَ قَوْمَهُ فَأَهْوَى بِثَوْبِهِ أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ أُتِيتُمْ ثَلَاثَ مِرَارٍ
