Hadith on Pardon: The Prophet lets an enemy combatant go free

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fought against the tribe of Muharib ibn Khasafah and a man among them named Ghawrath ibn al-Harith came until he was standing over the Messenger of Allah with a sword. The man said, “Who will protect you from me?” The Prophet said, “Allah.” The sword fell from his hand and the Prophet picked it up, saying, “Who will protect you from me?” The man said, “Be better than the offender!” The Prophet said, “Will you testify that there is no God but Allah and I am the Messenger of Allah?” The man said, “No, but I promise not to fight you, nor will I join anyone fighting you.” The Prophet let him go and the man returned to his people, saying, “I have just come to you from the best of people!”
