Hadith on Kunya: Changing names to safeguard monotheism

Shurayh reported: His father, Hani, attended the delegation with his people to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Prophet heard them calling him by his nickname Abu al-Hakam, father of judgement. The Prophet called him and he said, “Verily, Allah is the Judge, to Him belongs judgment, so why are you called father of judgement?” Hani said, “When my people disagree over something, they come to me and I judge between them and both parties are pleased.” The Prophet said, “How excellent is this! Do you have children?” Hani said, “I have Shurayh, Muslim, and Abdullah.” The Prophet said, “Who is the oldest of them?” Hani said, “Shurayh.” The Prophet said, “Then you are now Abu Shurayh, father of Shurayh.
