Malik on Bid’ah: What is worse than contradicting the Messenger?

Muhammad ibn al-Dahhak reported: A man came to Malik ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, and he said, “Where should I put on my clothes for pilgrimage?” Malik said, “At the places designated by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” The man said, “I will do it from a further place.” Malik said, “I do not agree with that.” The man said, “What do you dislike about that?” Malik said, “I dislike for you to be put to trial.” The man said, “What trial is there in doing more good?” Malik said, “Allah Almighty says, ‘So let them beware who contradict his order lest they be struck by a trial or a painful punishment,’ (24:63) and what trial is greater than that you assign a deed for yourself that was not chosen by the Messenger of Allah?”
