Hadith on Graves: Permission to set up a humble tombstone

Al-Mutallib reported: When Uthman ibn Madh’un died, he was brought out for his funeral and he was buried. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered a man to bring a rock but he was unable to carry it. The Prophet went to it and rolled up his sleeves, then he carried it and placed it at the head of the grave. The Prophet said, “I am making the grave of my brother known and I will bury my family members who die next to him.

Grade: Hasan (fair) according to Al-Arna’ut

Ibn Qudaham said, “There is nothing wrong with marking a grave with a stone or piece of wood. Ahmad said: There is nothing wrong for a man to make a grave known with a sign so that it is recognized.”

عَنِ الْمُطَّلِبِ قَالَ لَمَّا مَاتَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ مَظْعُونٍ أُخْرِجَ بِجَنَازَتِهِ فَدُفِنَ فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَأْتِيَهُ بِحَجَرٍ فَلَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ حَمْلَهُ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَحَسَرَ عَنْ ذِرَاعَيْهِ ثُمَّ حَمَلَهَا فَوَضَعَهَا عِنْدَ رَأْسِهِ وَقَالَ أَتَعَلَّمُ بِهَا قَبْرَ أَخِي وَأَدْفِنُ إِلَيْهِ مَنْ مَاتَ مِنْ أَهْلِي
