Malik on Tawhid: Attributes of Allah are above any modality

Abdullah ibn Wahb reported: We were with Malik ibn Anas, may Allah have mercy on him, when a man entered and he said, “O Abu Abdullah, ‘the Most Merciful rose above the Throne,’ (20:5). How did He rise?” Malik bowed his head in silence until he began to sweat, then he said, “The Most Merciful rose above the Throne as He described himself, and it was not said ‘how’ He did so. A modality is not attributable to Him. You are an evil man and a carrier of heresy. Expel him!” Then, the man was expelled.
