Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered a palm garden of the tribe of Al-Najjar one day, and he heard the voices of men from the tribe who had died in the time of ignorance being punished in their graves. The Prophet went out startled and he commanded his companions, saying, “Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of the grave.”

عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ دَخَلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا نَخْلًا لِبَنِي النَّجَّارِ فَسَمِعَ أَصْوَاتَ رِجَالٍ مِنْ بَنِي النَّجَّارِ مَاتُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يُعَذَّبُونَ فِي قُبُورِهِمْ فَخَرَجَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَزِعًا فَأَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ أَنْ يَتَعَوَّذُوا مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ
