Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the children of Israel split into seventy-one sects and this nation will surely split into seventy-two sects. All of them are in the Hellfire except one: the united community.”

Imam al-Qastallani commented, “The congregation that the Lawgiver commanded people to adhere to is the congregation of the leading scholars. For Allah has made them a proof against His creation, and it is to them that the common people turn in matters of their religion. Others have said they are the community of the Companions who established the religion, strengthened its foundations, and secured its pillars. Others have said they are the community of the Muslims whenever they are united upon a matter that the adherents of the religions are obliged to follow. If there is among them one who dissents from it, then they are no longer united.”

قال القسطلاني والجماعة التي أمر الشَّارع بلزومها جماعة أئمَّة العلماء لأنَّ الله تعالى جعلهم حجَّةً على خلْقه وإليهم تفزع العامَّة في أمر دينها وقال آخرون هم جماعة الصَّحابة الذين قاموا بالدِّين وقوَّموا عماده وثبَّتوا أوتاده وقال آخرون هم جماعة أهل الإسلام ما كانوا مجتمعين على أمرٍ واجبٍ على أهل المِلل اتِّباعه فإذا كان فيهم مخالفٌ منهم؛ فليسوا مجتمعين
