Hadith on Takathur: Competition for worldly goods misleads you

Ibn al-Zubayr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If the son of Adam had two valleys full of wealth, he would desire a third. Nothing satisfies his belly but the dust of the grave, yet Allah relents to those who repent.” Ubayy said, “We thought this was from the Quran until the verse was revealed, ‘Rivalry for worldly goods distracts you…’” (102:1)

عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَوْ كَانَ لِابْنِ آدَمَ وَادِيَانِ مِنْ مَالٍ لَابْتَغَى ثَالِثًا وَلَا يَمْلَأُ جَوْفَ ابْنِ آدَمَ إِلَّا التُّرَابُ وَيَتُوبُ اللهُ عَلَى مَنْ تَابَ وعَنْ ‌أُبَيٍّ قَالَ كُنَّا نَرَى هَذَا مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ حَتَّى نَزَلَتْ أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ
