Mihjan ibn al-Adra’ reported: I was eager to meet the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, one night, and he came out to fulfill one of his needs. The Prophet saw me, took my hand, and we set out. We passed by a man who was praying loudly with the Quran. The Prophet said, “Perhaps he is being ostentatious.” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, you recite the Quran aloud.” The Prophet raised his hands, then he said, “Verily, you will never achieve this matter by exaggeration.” Then, he came out another night, and we passed by a man praying with the Quran. I said, “Perhaps he is being ostentatious.” The Prophet said, “Nay, rather he is penitent.”
