Al-Ma’mur ibn Suwayd reported: We were with Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, between Mecca and Medina, and we performed the dawn prayer. Then, he saw people descending to pray in a mosque. Umar asked about them, and they said, “It is a mosque in which the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed prayer.” Umar said, “Verily, those before you were destroyed for taking the footprints of their Prophets as a transaction! Whoever passes by any mosque while it is time to pray, let him pray there, or if not, let him move on.”

عَنِ الْمَعْرُورِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ قَالَ كُنْتُ مَعَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بَيْنَ مَكَّةَ وَالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَلَّى بِنَا الْفَجْرَ ثُمَّ رَأَى أَقْوَامًا يَنْزِلُونَ فِيُصَلُّونَ فِي مَسْجِدٍ فَسَأَلَ عَنْهُمْ فَقَالُوا مَسْجِدٌ صَلَّى فِيهِ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ أَنَّهُمُ اتَّخَذُوا آثَارَ أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ بِيَعًا مَنْ مَرَّ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الْمَسَاجِدِ فَحَضَرَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَلْيُصَلِّ وِإِلَّا فَلْيَمْضِ
