Hadith on Promises: Abu Bakr keeps the Prophet’s pledge

Jabir ibn Abdullah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If the goods come from Bahrain, I will give you such and such amount.” The goods from Bahrain did not arrive until after the Prophet passed away. When the goods arrived, Abu Bakr ordered an announcement, “Whoever has a promise or a debt from the Prophet, let him come to us and we will give it to him.” I said, “Indeed, the Prophet told me I could have such and such amount.” Abu Bakr gave me a handful of coins and I counted it as five hundred. Abu Bakr said, “Take twice what you have been promised.”
