Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Between the two blasts of the Trumpet will be forty.” They said, “O Abu Huraira, forty days?” He said, “I cannot say.” They said, “Forty years?” He said, “I cannot say.” They said, “Forty months?” He said, “I cannot say.” And the Prophet said, “Everything of the human being will decay except for his coccyx tailbone, by which his creation is reconstructed.”

Imam Ibn Hajar commented, “Ibn ‘Uqayl said, ‘Allah has a hidden wisdom in this that none knows except Allah, for the One who brings existence forth from non-existence has no need of anything upon which to build.’ It is also possible that this was made as a sign for the angels indicating that every human being will be resurrected with his very essence, and that the angels would not attain knowledge of this except through the preservation of a bone from each person—so that it would be known what is intended thereby is the return of the souls to those very entities of which that bone is a part. If nothing of them were preserved, the angels might suppose that the restoration was to bodies similar to the former ones, rather than to the same bodies themselves. His statement, ‘Everything of the human being decays,’ may mean that it perishes, that is, that its parts are entirely annihilated; and it may also mean that it undergoes transformation, such that its familiar form disappears and it becomes like the substances of earth, then is restored when it is reassembled into what was previously known.”
