Duwayd ibn Nafi’ reported: Abu Mansur al-Farisi had a certain sharpness in his temperament. I mentioned it to him and he said, “I would not want to be without it, for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Sharpness may arise in the best of my nation.”

Imam al-San’ani commented, “Sharpness refers to lightness and energy, but what is intended here is firmness, intensity, and quickness in carrying out good, without being deterred by others in doing so, as the commentator has stated. It is also possible that what is meant is a certain quickness or edge in any matter—whether it may be praiseworthy or blameworthy—but that it does not persist. This is why the wording ‘may arise’ was used, which indicates that it appears and then quickly subsides. This serves as a sign that one who possesses such a trait is generally disposed toward goodness and a source of it.”
