Imam Ibn al-Malak commented, “It is said ‘a man makes excuses’ when he becomes one whose sins are numerous, in need of an excuse due to the abundance of his sins, meaning, until their sins and faults become so abundant that they deserve punishment, and they provide an excuse for the one who punishes them for that—so that they, in effect, cannot prevent their punishment.”
