Hadith on Rulers: Support Muslim governments, not rebel or humiliate them

Mu’waiyah ibn Abi Sufyan reported: When Abu Dharr set out for al-Rabadah, he was met by riders from the people of Iraq. They said, “O Abu Dharr, we have heard what was done to you, so raise a banner and men will come to you in numbers as you wish!” Abu Dharr said, “Careful! Careful, O people of Islam! For I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say: There will be authorities after me, so strengthen them. Whoever seeks to humiliate them has struck at the throat of Islam. His repentance will not be accepted until he retracts it as it had been.”

Imam al-Qarrafi commented, “It is obligatory to obey the leaders and to show them respect, and likewise their deputies. If they disobey through injustice or by suspending a prescribed legal punishment, then it becomes obligatory to admonish them, and it is forbidden to obey them in disobedience or to assist them in it. It is not permissible to rebel against whoever has assumed authority, even if he is unjust… A foundational principle is that regulating public welfare is obligatory, and it cannot be properly maintained except by the rulers holding a high standing in the hearts of the subjects. Whenever their authority is contested or they are humiliated, the realization of public welfare becomes impossible.”
