Abu Malik al-Ash’ari reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, among the best servants of Allah in this nation are those who, when they are seen, Allah Almighty is remembered. Among the worst servants of Allah in this nation are those who spread gossip, dividing loved ones and wishing misery upon the innocent.”

Imam al-Munawi commented, “The worst of you spread gossip, which means to transmit the speech of some people to others for corrupt reasons, dividing loves ones by their efforts to incite conflicts between them… It was revealed to Moses, ‘In your land there is a tale-bearer spreading gossip, and I will not send rain while he remains in your land.’ Moses said, ‘My Lord, show him to me so I may expel him!’ Allah said, ‘O Moses, I hate gossip and forbid it for Myself.’ Thus, how evil is a trait that leads to withholding rain from the world!”

قال المناوي وشراركم المشاؤون بالنميمة وهي نقل حديث بعض القوم لبعض للإفساد المفرقون بين الأحبة بما يسعون به بينهم من الفتن … أوحي إلى موسى أن في بلدك ساعيا أي بالنميمة ولست أمطرك وهو في أرضك قال يا رب دلني عليه أخرجه قال يا موسى اكره النميمة وانه فأقبح بخصلة تفضي إلى حبس قطر السماء عن العالم
