Hadith on Animals: Give creatures their rights, unlike ruthless Satan

Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If you travel through fertile land, then give the riding animals their rights and proper share. If you travel through barren land, then move quickly for their sake. Travel during the night, for the earth is traversed more easily at night. And if you camp, do not camp upon the roadway, for it is the dwelling place of every wild creature.

Imam al-San’ani commented, “If you ride these animals, then give them their rights at the rest stops, and do not be over them like devils, that is, do not be like devils from whose hearts mercy and gentleness have been stripped, such that nothing comes from them except every form of evil. Or it may mean: give the animals their share of rest where people customarily dismount from riding animals out of kindness to them due to the hardship of the terrain—or perhaps both meanings are intended together.”
