Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “If you travel through fertile land, then give the camels their rightful share of the earth. If you travel during drought and scarcity, then hasten their pace. And if you camp at night, avoid the roadway, for it is the dwelling place of wild creatures during the night.”

Imam al-Nawawi commented, “The meaning of this hadith is to encourage gentleness toward riding animals and to care for their well-being. If people travel through fertile land, they should reduce the pace of travel and allow the animals to graze during part of the day and throughout the journey, so they may take their share of the earth by feeding from it. If they travel during drought and scarcity, they should hasten the journey so they may reach their destination while the animals still retain some of their strength. They should not slow the pace in such conditions, lest harm come to the animals, because they will not find enough to graze upon. Thus, they become weak, lose their bodily strength, and perhaps become exhausted and unable to continue.”
