Al-Bara’ reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by some people from the Ansar while they were sitting in the road. The Prophet said, “If you insist on doing so, then return greetings of peace, support the oppressed, and guide the travelers.”

Imam al-Qastallani commented, “The rights of the road are lowering the gaze from everything unlawful, refraining from harming the creation, returning greetings of peace, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong to the extent of one’s ability. Umar added in his narration recorded by Abu Dawud: Assist the distressed and guide the lost. In the narration of Abu Talhah al-Ansari: Guide the traveler. And: Pray for mercy upon the sneezing person when he praises Allah. And in the narration collected by al-Bazzar: Help others load their burdens.”
